Casa Montone is known
to the locals of the village of Montone as La Torre di Guardia. In the
above image (a painting in the local museum dated 1482),
it is the building between the "a" of La and "T"
of Torre. Casa Montone is a lovely and charming 3-story house. It is
500 years old and is completely restored.
The village of Montone
is a romantic, picturesque medieval walled Umbrian hill town, a peaceful
village of about 900 people. Original stone buildings date to the 15th
century. Inside the walled town,
the
town square includes two bar/cafes,a butcher, a green-grocer, post office
and bank. There are two churches, a small museum, a small hotel, and
two restaurants. Outside the walls is a grocery store, a trattoria,
a gas station, and a small "new" town. Montone is centrally located,
near highway E45, about 45 minutes from Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, and
Deruta, 2 hours from Florence, and 1&1/2 hours
to Siena and Orvieto.
